Lack of Sidewalks on Mt. Lolo Road

Mt. Lolo Road

This photo was taken on Mt. Lolo Road at 2:18 PM on the 29th of March. It showcases an invisible barrier in the area: the lack of dedicated sidewalks. While Mt. Lolo Road isn’t a city-owned natural park, it is well traveled by sightseers, hikers, and cyclists, as well as vehicle traffic. Unfortunately, a lack of maintained sidewalks alongside this road often forces elderly hikers and cyclists to share the main road with motor vehicles, who at times will disregard speed limits in this remote location. The narrow gravel footpath beside the road constitutes hostile design, since its proximity to the road puts cyclists and hikers at risk of being hit by speeding vehicles, and the only alternatives are to either walk on the main road, or navigate the underbrush alongside, neither of which are ideal options for the elderly hikers who at times traverse this road.
