95 Third Ave Kamloops BC V2C 1Y1 Canada 50.67678° N, 120.33443° W
This railway crossing is an example of Hostile Architecture in Downtown Kamloops. As seen in the photo, the stairs are quite tall. Not pictured is the other side of the bridge, which is also stairs. The number of stairs on this bridge prevents wheelchair and stroller users from accessing it, as well as those who are unable to exert themselves.
There is another way to get to Riverside Park, which is just using the sidewalks beside the road. This can prove difficult for some, as it goes directly across train tracks, making it easy for wheels to get stuck in the tracks. If any train is going by, which happens a lot in Kamloops, the only way to get across is the stairs. Making the accessibility unfair to anyone with mobility impairments.
The sign seen in the photo says, “Please take the stairs for health and safety.” This sign implies that taking a route other than the stairs would not be safe. This is unfair to anyone with mobility impairments, who can’t help not being able to take the stairs, and they should not have to risk their safety due to careless design flaws.
